Program Overview

Learn the technical and creative aspects of costuming for both theatre and film in this two year, full-time diploma program.

Developed in collaboration with the motion picture industry, this diploma program is unique in B.C. and Canada in that it offers a motion picture costuming component in addition to theatre costuming. The program covers costume history, textiles, wardrobe management, cutting and construction techniques, and includes hands-on experience working on University Theatre, Musical theatre productions and student film projects.

Upon completion, students will be knowledgeable in:

  • style and changes in costume evolution
  • effective research techniques
  • setting up production costume shops
  • drafting basic patterns
  • constructing garments
  • interpreting designer’s sketches
  • organizing and maintaining costume stock
  • dyeing textiles and ageing costumes
  • running crew for stage performances
  • preparation and care of costumes – fittings and alterations
  • on-set procedures for costume continuity – dressing performers
  • script breakdown and analysis for costuming requirements

The program is best suited to students who wish to find employment in the cultural industry (theatre, dance, opera, ballet) and film/television production, or to those who wish to pursue their own business or entrepreneurial projects. Participants come from diverse backgrounds. However, they all share an interest in costuming. Applicants should have a professional attitude and be able to demonstrate some sewing skills.

Interview Portfolio should include a resume, a 200 word cover letter stating why you want to be in costumes, a letter of reference, several samples of your sewing skills, one sample of hand sewing skills. Also accepted: fashion sketches done for your own interest, or sketches or pictures of costumes for plays or short films , other samples of handiwork such as fabric painting/dyeing, beadwork.

For those applicants from out of the Lower Mainland, please be prepared to mail your portfolio to the Bosa Film and Animation Centre prior to your telephone interview. All interviews are held in May.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are qualified for entry-level positions in motion picture and theatre costuming departments. After gaining some experience in the industry, they often move on to positions as stitchers, dressers, and set or prep costumers.
